NIH PROGRAM

In 2010 the 100 Black Men of Greater Washington D.C., began a partnership to select 20 students to take part as participants and 10 students to shadow for total of 30. The students are chosen through an application process, last year more than 80 students applied for 30 spots.  The vision is to grow the program to a capacity of 100 students per year locally and develop a week long summer program for 30 students across the country.

Purpose

The aim of the program is to aid selected students in acquiring basic laboratory techniques, learning data acquisition and organizational skills, understanding methods of data analysis and interpretation, and developing writing skills to generate research conclusions. It is hoped that the program will lead to participants’ increased interest in science and biomedical research.

  • Develop participants’ awareness of careers in the biomedical field
  • Support and increase minority participation in science careers
  • Enhance participants’ level of scientific literacy
  • Enhance student’s college application

Training for the students will be provided by the Bio-Trac, Biotechnology Training Center at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

  • 8 sessions for 20-30 participants
  • 40 contact hours per participant
  • One hour lecture instruction/per session
  • Four hours of lab instruction/per session
  • Binders, handouts, and lab protocols
  • Disposable lab materials/equipment

Goal

The 100 Black Men of Greater Washington, D.C., recognizes that many of the growth industries are based in science, technology, engineering and math. It is our desire to expose minority students to STEM programming to open their eyes to different career choices and opportunities.

TUTORING

The tutoring programs are geared towards elementary age youth in the areas of reading and math. We currently have three tutorial sites within the District of Columbia each with between 25-40 students participating. One tutor is assigned as few as three and as many as five students. Our tutorial program focuses on math and reading between the first through sixth grades. The unique thing about our program is that it is designed to help students who are falling behind and those that are excelling.

If you would like to volunteer as a tutor, please click here and complete the form. Someone from our volunteers committee will be in touch with you within 48 to 72 hours. Please note that any volunteers, who come into contact with any of our youth, must go through our background check process.

SAT PREPARATION

We offer free SAT preparatory courses to juniors and seniors in high school in the Greater Washington DC area on an annual basis. This program has been possible due to the generous support of our partner, The Princeton Review, who has assisted by funding the cost of the supplies and the instructors.

The application package can be filled out in 15 minutes and the essay can be completed in under an hour. Please note that there is a three stage submission process. Applications must be sent by e-mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it in order to be considered.
