Parent Testimonials

“Appreciation,” “respect,” “attentiveness,” “joy,” “worthwhile,” “fun” and “leadership.” These are just a few words that come to mind regarding the 100 and SLA. My only knowledge of the program was through word of mouth and from looking into the program on line. The first “meet and greet” was receptive and informative about the program, and lots of laughs. But in time, you guys engulfed my son in activities that challenged his mind and behavior. He not only became involved, he also evolved.

The one thing I really like about the program is your teaching of effective communication skills. To get participants to take their voices from whispers to thunderous roars is amazing. My son was shy at first about introducing himself to the team and the program. But in just a short amount of time, his head is now held high, his voice is strong and his encouragement is apparent to all around him. Never was there a moment in which a leader was not there by his side to share words of motivation. So, thanks again to all the leaders for your time. You have truly been a blessing.

- Darlene Coachman

My son is 15 years old and is in his second year of high school. He has been with the 100 Black Men's Saturday Leadership Academy (SLA) for almost one year. I am continually impressed by the dedication of the members of the organization towards the young men that they mentor. Initially, my son was not interested in participating in the SLA but attended at my insistence. Now, my son looks forward to the meetings and being among the other attendees. My son has learned to present himself with confidence and, after coaching from the 100 Black Men, has more thoroughly examined and organized his goals for the future. He understands now how his actions today can impact the choices available to him tomorrow. During the current school year, my son has managed better than a B average, which is a stark contrast to last year.

My son is not only benefiting from the leadership examples from the mentors, but is also benefiting from the growing camaraderie among his fellow attendees. The SLA program provides mentoring and guidance towards goal setting, raises confidence, espouses respect for others, and demands excellence in all that my son does. The program also affords the attendees the opportunity to meet a diverse array of local business owners and other professionals. Through the SLA my son has also been given the opportunity to experience non academic activities such as sports games, plays, movies, poetry readings, etc. In total, the activities of the SLA program are geared towards guiding and uplifting the young men with an eye on their future. Now my son looks forward as much as I do to his continuing his participation through the SLA program throughout high school and beyond.
