Written Essay

Applicants are required to submit a written essay (a minimum 600 words, maximum 1500 words) based upon one (1) of the following topics.  It is strongly encouraged and preferred that Applicants submit typed Essays.

Police Brutality:  Over the years, there continue to be high-profile police brutality cases involving young black men.  While incidences like the recent killing of an unarmed black man by a transit police officer in Oakland , California make national headlines, there are many more cases that are not discussed in the news but are equally as devastating to families, communities, and young black males.  Is police brutality a serious problem? What factors contribute to it?  How does police brutality affect society? How can police brutality be prevented?

Career Goals in the age of President Obama:  President Obama is the first African American to become the President of the United States .  How has his election impacted your aspirations about a future career?  What barriers do you expect, and how will you overcome them?  Do you think attaining your career goals will become more or less difficult? Explain why or why not. How does having an African-American President influence America 's perception of the black man in the professional arena?  How does it influence your own self-perception as a young black man in America ?

Decline of the Black Family:  Marriage in the Black community is becoming less of a norm, and Black women continue to deal with absent fathers while raising children alone.  As a result, many Black boys are being siphoned out of the pool of marriageable Black men, and Black boys and girls are growing
up being ill-prepared to have healthy relationships.  What is the impact of the decline of the black family on society as a whole and the black community specifically?
