Mentoring Programs

Mentoring is the cornerstone to all of the 100's programs. Over the years, our programs have evolved and expanded into the 100's areas: These categories include mentoring, education, health & wellness, and economic development. We believe if we focus our efforts on these areas we will create a foundation of success for the youth in our community.

Our Saturday Leadership Academy (SLA) is a group based mentoring program for African American males in grades 8-12. The SLA meets every other Saturday from October through February (Fall/Winter Session) and every Saturday from the end of June through early August (Summer Session) from 8:30am to noon. Our mentees are taught the following creed so they can understand the importance of their everyday decisions:

"I stand at the center of today, shaping and guiding my tomorrow, through my talents, my gifts, my contributions, and my involvement with my community and family. I Respect myself and those around me. I will grow to my highest potential."

Saturday Leadership Academy 2009The purpose of the SLA is to enhance school performance and to be a vehicle for African-American youth in the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area that teaches personal goal setting and leadership skills. The program is designed to develop youth into leaders by inspiring them to identify personal dreams or goals and build action plans toward achieving them. Further, the SLA was established by our chapter to provide these youth with the information and skills necessary for academic success and productive citizenship. Another purpose of the SLA is to provide scholarship opportunities for young people. Through 100 BMOGW and its partners, SLA participants may apply for a scholarship in their senior year of high school. The SLA provides information and teaches skills on the following:

  • Financial planning
  • Health and wellness
  • Community service
  • Character
  • Etiquette
  • Technology education
  • Academic enrichment in the areas of math and science.

The SLA provides us the opportunity to collaborate with community leaders, business partners, educators, mental health professionals, and others seeking to build a stronger community and develop young minds. You can register online or download the registration form and fax it to 703-757-5480.
